I've seen this before when the console device (on the SPARC) is set to
use /dev/console. Instead, try switching it in /etc/inittab to use
ttyS0 like so:
T0:23:respawn:/sbin/getty -L ttyS0 9600 vt102
Another thing (if that isn't the case) is to attempt playing with your
serial settings... flow control, etc.
