    hi,
    i installed a ultra2 with suse 7.1 (btw. 7.3 beta1 and beta2 are not
    booting)
headless. i also used minicom. serial setup is 9600,8,n,1 xon-xoff
    (wires 2,3 and 7 only)

if you want to scroll with minicom press ctrl-a followed by "b" then you
    will get a history

at the silo prompt you could try:
    SILO: yast2 expert=1 TERM=vt102
    this would improve the terminaloutput

    good luck.
btw. my ultra2 is running quite fast with suse 7.1 but i have problems
to boot 7.3 with kernel 2.4.10 and had no chance to work with an
external raid array of 3 disks.
