    I was testing performance on a SPARC 2 also (same machine) and it was
    horribly slow, even with old Red Hat 6.0. Running GNOME ore KDE is no fun on
    this box. My SPARC 5 does an acceptable job with icewm, but KDE and Gnome are
    also problematic. If you don't need X these machines might work fine as
    terminals or gateways.
    I know that Solaris 2.6 is running quite well, but don't bother installing
    version 7 or 8, speed will go down significantly. Linux is noticably faster.
