Hi all,
some news on my problem with kernel 2.2.19 and mutiple scsi disks /
external CD-Roms:
It looks like Dan Carter's tip works: compile the scsi driver "esp.c" with
a older GCC
compiler.
I downloaded gcc-2.8.1 onto my SS5 #1 and compiled the gcc-2.8.1 using
gcc-2.9.5-2,
bison, flex and gnu-make from SuSE 7.1 SPARC.
After that I transfered the gcc-2.8.1 onto my SS5 #2 (with SuSE 7.3 beta1
installed), re-
compiled the whole 2.2.19 kernel with the "normal" gcc-2.95-3 compiler.
Then I removed
the "esp.o" file, and re-compiled just the "esp.c" again using the
gcc-2.8.1 compiler.
After that I linked the whole kernel using gcc-2.9.5-3 / ld, installed the
kernel and rebooted.
Tests with an external hardrive (old SUN 2GB) and the external CD-R
(Plextor 8/20)
showed none of the usual scsi errors when I (write-) accessed the external
disk or did
install software (using yast1) from the CD-Rom. Normally all these actions
created a
lot of scsi errors almost instantaneously.
