...and it won't get faster. GUIs like KDE or GNOME are simply to much for an
SS2. I have one running base linux, but no X, no servers, or other daemons
that might use more mem then actually needed. Even with this config you can
see that the commands are executed with a noticably delay. Starting X would
simply kill the machine.

You might install a base system, with all needed packages for a runnable
Linux and then you should install only those packages you realy need. Don't
forget to have a look at the startup files if there are some daemons you do
not need to be running in the background.
