There is a page called UltraLinux which contains a lot of useful tips
around
Linux on SPARC's; your question about hardware would be partly answered
in:
http://www.ultralinux.org/faq.html#q_2_1
On this list there was once a tip about how to install Linux on a
SS5/170: transfer the disk of the 170 into
a SS5/110 or 85 (or another sun4m if you have one around with the
SCA-SCSI-adapters), install Linux
and bring the disk back to the 170. I have no idea if that get's you a
stable release, but you might try.....
On the other hand I had problems with the SS5 and kernel 2.2.18 and 2.4.2
as well (kernel 2.4.9 wouldn't even
boot, but it _did_ say so on the label...;-) ), so I did compile a kernel
2.2.19 with gcc-2.95.2 which came with
SuSE 7.1, and did compile only the SCSI driver "esp.c" with an older
gcc-2.8.1; since I run that kernel on a
SS5/85, I have no problems at all (meanwhile my SS5/110 with SuSE kernel
2.4.2 has locked up again, it
does that every 2 weeks....)
Hope it helps,
Thomas

Are there any efforts to get 2.4.x to work on the 32-bit systems? Quite
honestly, it's a little disappointing to hear. I'd help if i knew
anything
about kernel hacking. =)

Ahh... I'll track those down.

Hmm. Where is this documented, if anywhere? If i had known this about a
year ago when I bought this system, I might have gone for a 100MHz version
instead. Is there anywhere that documents what or why the 170MHz models
are problematic, and/or what the problems tend to be?
Many thanks!
