    I had the same problem with te original kernel from suse 7.3
    I have upgrade to 2.4.19-rc3 from Thorsten Kukuk (
    ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/kukuk/SPARC/kernel ),
    and all is working fine ( more than 2 months uptime)
