    I managed to get it to work in fits and starts. The sound server stuff in
    the KDE control panel should be turned off.

    Somewhere in the control panel (I think under "Look and Feel") you can tell
    KDE to manually run an external app to play the sounds (/usr/bin/play).

    Which begs the question: what package contains /usr/bin/play? I wasn't
    installed during my 7.3 install and I can't find the package it belongs to.
