    O.K. it's an IBM Deskstar 80Gb, ata100, model 07N8084. 7200rpm

run yast2 to see what the parameters where and got back

    cy = 159560, h = 16, s = 63

so #fdisk /dev/hdc got the no valid partiton table message, and a menu
head 'Drive type' select 0, custom with hardware defaults and followed the
menu can anyone fill in the gaps this would be greatly appreciated.

Select type (? for auto, 0 for custom): 0 go into
    custom mode
    Heads (1-1024, default 16): 16 value
from yast2 and ibm tech spec .pdf
    Sectors/track (1-1024, default 63): value
from yast2 and ibm tech spec .pdf
    Using default value 63
    Cylinders (1-65535, default 28486): 159560 tried this
    Value out of range.
    opps, but expected
    Cylinders (1-65535, default 28486):
    Using default value 28486
    bugger, why this value ?
    Alternate cylinders (0-65535, default 2): What's
    this ?
    Using default value 2
    Does that mean 2 x 28486
    Physical cylinders (0-65535, default 28488): o.k. but i
still can't give you the value the drive really has
    Using default value 28488
    Rotation speed (rpm) (1-100000, default 5400): 7200
    Using default value 5400
    Interleave factor (1-32, default 1): ?
    Using default value 1
Extra sectors per cylinder (0-63, default 0): Help
    Using default value 0

Have already had a different 80Gb in the machine and that went in no
problem, so is this drive incompatible ? or am i just totally missing the
    point?

    yours a.r.b.
