ahh, it always seems so obvious once you know what it is...
The idea that it was a hardware problem led me to reconfigure the scsi
chain of devices, leading to a successful (so far) install. Perhaps there
was some bad termination going on, which revealed itself as flakey
treatment of the disk. Thanks for getting me to think along these lines.
