    Subject: [suse-sparc] Sparc Ultra5 and Suse7.3 Install success-so far

    Hi
I have had some interesting times installing SuSE 7.3 on a Sparc Ultra 5, so
I thought I would add my two pennies worth of knowledge to the mailing list.

First I had problems getting the Install to get past the Keyboard Set-up,
this I have more or less isolated to a conflict between the Install
    localisation and the keyboard.
I have a US sparc but I live in the UK, so a UK language option and US
keyboard selection appears to crash the system completely. Using a US
language option and US keyboard gets me to the rest of the YAST 2 install.

Second I had a problem with the Sparc not booting of the CD after it had
    initially worked.
This drove me mad for a bit, the Internet has lots of references to Sparc
boxes not booting of disks which are related to a labelling issue and
involves a lot of jumping through hoops with fdisk to get the corect sort of
    label onto the disk.
After going home and leaving the machine off over night the next day the CD
booted, and then stoped booting again. In desparation I thought it was a
NORAM problem and opened the case to look for a hardware reset option, at
the same time I checked the IDE cables and found they were not pushed home
properly. So as the Sparc warmed up the CD drive stopped communicating
    properly.
This would not have been hard to believe if it wasn't a new machine fresh
out of the box. Hmm poor QA or travelling half way round the world, take
    your pick.

I found and read Mr Bruce Forsberg's article at
    http://www.linuxgazette.com/issue72/forsberg.html which proved very useful
for setting up the partitioning and installation. The Use whole disk option
crashed the install, but leaving the Solaris partitions on and using the
'empty' partition for Linux partitions worked.

Hope these little nuggets of information are useful.
