NT-DNS may cause some trouble :-) but i wouldn't hold it responsible
for this. first: are you guys using DNS for name resolution also for
localhost? then, ping on my system does only the first time an
address resolution (try -n if you don't want that). then you probably
have nscd running which caches a number of names once you resolved it for
a certain period of time.

what do you mean by that? are we talking about broadcast pings here?
