I'm sorry for Sparc'ing such strife in the mailinglist. I'm only trying
to find a working version of 2.4 for my sun4c architecture so that I can
use iptables as my firewall and still be able to retain my VPN access to
my company network.
I want to thank everyone for their willingness to help, the suggestions
that I've received, and the help being offered. Unfortunately, I fear
that I'm using outdated hardware that isn't being supported as well as the
sun4m and sun4u line. I can't blame anyone for the dwindling support,
it's kind of like asking that the 2.4 series kernel be made to compile on
a 386 system. It probably won't happen. :)
Let me say, that I do enjoy SuSE, and the support that I have received,
and will continue using it in the future since it is one of the few
distros left that still support the Sparc architecture. My plans now are
to get a bigger harddrive and do a full installation of SuSE 7.3. I did that
recently on a Sparc 2 for a friend, and during the graphical install, it
actually asked me which kernels to install. I picked both of them, and
when it was done, I was able to boot up on 2.2.20 and then on the 2.4.14
kernel. When I loaded this system, I only have room for a minimal install,
and during it, it never asks me to choose a kernel to install. I'm going
to see what the difference is between the two machines. I don't know if
the boot prom makes any difference at all. I found the 2.4 32bit kernel
on CD1 and installed it, but it won't boot up at all.
Thanks again for everything, and I hope to have more to report to you in
the future.
