    I've got same problems you describe on some i386 installation and it was
    caused by wrong mouse type selection.
    Another strange problem with my Ultra 3000 is that it works fine with
    the 2.4.2 kernel distribuited with suse 7.1 !!!! In conclusion I have
    mouse and keyboard locked only with 2.4.14 kernel of suse 7.3
    Please, help me !!

     I encountered the same problem on a Enterprise 4000 machine. It seems
    a
    2.2.. series kernel works as far as the keyboard and mouse while a
    2.4...
    kernel will not. A 2.4.7 kernel will boot and actually run just fine.
    I
    had to shutdown or control through telnet. The one problem I had with
    with
    the mouse on a 2.2.22 and otherkernels is the mouse pointer would
    sometimes
    go everywhere on the screen with butten events, causing lots of apps to
    open. I tried another keyboard, mouse, and clock board, which the mouse
    attaches to with no luck.
