I had similar problems with a SparcStation 5, with a disk without any
partition table.
It wasn't possible to partition it using the SuSE 7.3 install program
(even erasing and rereading the partition table didn't help). The only
way i found was to fdisk the drive manually.
If you install over a serial console where you can't switch the virtual
console to get a shell, the only way i found was to remove the disk and
mount it on another computer.
After that i just read the existing partition table in the install
program and everything went fine.
