Thanks
I've got it installed and working now.
Turned out to be a bad CD. I cut another one and it was fine.
I did have one problem. If, during the install, I selected the UK locale
instead of the default US the system hung as soon as I clicked <next> and
had to be power cycled. This happened with both the graphical and text based
installers. I got round it by using the US locale for the install and then
changing all the setting later. This must be unique to me because it's so
fundamental that it would have been found and fixed by now!

Hi Richard,
Don't give up !
I have installed on a dual CPU Ultra 60, works great, but I did have a
couple of install issues.
I too had an install error as above, I believe it was due to the way
had tried to format one of the drives, I ended up letting the install
program use an entire drive, with default partitions. (This worked)
Next I was playing with silo / yast2 and messed up my configuration,
tried to write to the mbr, instead of using /boot, this somehow failed,
and was unable to boot.
In attempting to reboot using cd-1, the install start-up hung at the
same place each time, alt-F4 (I think it was f4) confirmed that the cd
was encountering a read error. Thus inever made it to the option of
'boot installed system'. Either I had a bad cd-rw, or the iso image was
corrupt. I belive the cd-rw was bad, it had been used many times
before, and had failed a couple of times on the first install.
To be safe I re-downloaded the iso, and burned on a cd=r, works great,
no issues. If the install hangs for any long period, try switching the
console, if there are errors you might be able to track it down.
The only other item that needed post-install adjustment was setting up
the acceleration for the graphics card. If you have an Elite3D M3/M6
card, you will need to use the Sun afb.ucode, and a couple of helper
programs to load it. (took the afb.ucode off the Solaris 8 cd). It
loads at boot (prior to starting the x-server). If you get to this
point let me know, I could send the ucode & init, & rc code, or the url.
George
ps: also tried Mandrake - never made it out of the install program!
