I'm not sure...,
you are using an ASCII-Terminal via the serial port, aren't you??
please have a look at the OBP-Parameters 'input-device' and
'output-device'.
at the ok-prompt type 'printenv' then you get the list.
may be they are set to 'keyboard' and 'screen', so the system expects
input from keyboard and not from serial port...
try to set them both on ttya with
ok> setenv output-device ttya
ok> setenv input-device ttya
