    I have audio working fine on my ultra 2 with suse 7.3.
    Sound works with both the default smp kernel and the
    new one (2.4.19 pre8) that I built.

    Are you sure that your hardware works? Have you ever
    had sound working on the machine before?

    If so, start with sound card configuration in yast2,
    and then make sure that you have the volume on in
    aumix. What sound daemon are you using? I use esd and
    it works flawlessly. I play mp3s in xmms and watch
    video with sound in xine.
