My 2 cents (more) on this:
Others here have advised, when having these Sun label problems under a Yast2
install, to put a Sun Disk label on the drive, then delete ALL partitions
and let Yast2 do the rest. For what it's worth, SILO looks for the boot
image on /dev/sda4. And, even if you didn't set up your Boot Prom in
advance, you should be able to issue commands via the prom 'manually'
(unpleasant, but a stopgap for the moment...)
At the Boot Prom ok #: do a 'show-devs' - the ...sbus...sd@n... entry (where
'n' is preferrably '3') is your hard drive. (In a normal install, SILO
creates an alias to this entry, enabling the command 'boot' to work. Check
out the contents of your /proc/openprom directory as some later date...)
SCSI ID 3 is a Sun 'convention', but is certainly not absolutely necessary.
If this entry matches your 'Boot device' as below, you're on track. If it
does not, you can hand-enter that whole device address to try it, as in:
ok # boot /iommu/sbus/...(etc)
However, if it _does_ match, you either did not install SILO, or it's on a
partition unusable by SuSE. (From what you've been saying, this sounds most
likely).
Another test: Once you've booted from the CDROM, can you use the option to
boot an installed system?? Does this work??? I believe you can also use
Yast's 'Update Entire System' command to re-install SILO, no?? (Others here
will know better about this...)
I have no experience with the SS5; it may display particular oddities under
Yast2 - others here can help.
