Subject: [suse-sparc] My findings installing SuSE 7.3 on a SparcStation 5

    Hi you all,

I would like to post some of the findings i did during installation on my
SparcStation 5. I posted some questions on this list earlier and managed to
answer some of them myself. I hope this can be helpfull to some of you.

Fitst of all what is good to know is the configuration of my SS5. It is the
normal SS5 (110Mhz, 128MB, GFX graphics) only the disks differ from
standard. I have added a Quantum Viking IV 8,4 GB disk to the normal Seagate
Sun 500MB disk. I found out this last addidition probably caused most of my
    problems.

At first i could not install SuSE at all. Yast failed during fdisk. This was
because of missing Sun disk labels. Appearently this was solved by using a
solaris or suse cd and performing fdisk via command prompt. I still doubt if
the large quantum disk has a correct sun label set. Nevertheless after
fdisking and changing this layout again during setup i was able to install
SuSE on this large disk but could not boot from it.
Inspecting the bootprom learned that installation did set a correct boot
alias linking to the correct disk and partition. Booting via CDROM and
aborting Yast to then boot from the installed system also worked.
I the figured that the boot prom could not access the large disk in some
matter. The boot partition where the first 16mb of the disk and should not
cause any problem i thought. I reinstalled SuSE as wel as Solaris but both
failed on the large disk. After i but more playing with the bootprom i
figured i should install the boot partition on the smaller disk which i
think has a correct disk label. This is what i have done last night and
today i first booted my SS5 and everything went well.
I don't know if it is the so called disklabel or the size of the disk. I
can't find no information about that maybe someboy here has an idea.

As many of you found before me. Yast does not recognize any of the install
cd's i also can't get automatic update from ftp to work. I hope i or
somebody else will find the answer to this problem soon.

    That's it for now.

    Greetings,
    Bob
