Ok....

Here is what I had to do.. I had an SS5/170... and ended up formatting
the drives on another Sparc machine that I had. Once I got the drive
formatted I was able to install the OS....

I also had this problem when I built some SS5 machines. I got around it
by aborting the install mid-stream and formatting the drives by hand
(mke2fs or mkreiserfs) and then restarting the install. Probably
there is a more elegant approach but it worked for me. Never could get
yast2 to do this properly.
BTW: I also had a number of other problems with yast2. I found the best
approach is to use yast2 to do the minimum install and afterwards to use
yast to upgarde the base install according to my taste.
