    Hi Kevin,

Sorry to say, but i think so, yes, you'll have to compile the lot.
There is no news of a new version for the sparc-distro, and as the last days
of 2002 slipped away, the same with the hope for a 8.1 sparc release.

One would hope that all the packages that WERE built succesfully, could be
    available on the ftp-server.
For instance, for ia-32 and ppc, ther are several project-directories with
    pre-compiles rpm's...
    ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/poeml/apache2/8.1-i386/
    or
    ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/samba/i386/8.1/

Or something like a pre-beta version with everything that did compile ok,
    like:
    ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc64/BETA/

I would hope, that if a new (version of) package is build for IA-32, suse
can run the same source packages through a cross-compiler for ia-64, ppc,
    ibm, sparc-32 sparc-64,....
and put the result in an "compiled but untested" directory.
If it even failes to compile for a different arch, it might be a good reason
to check the source files anyway. And if it succeeds, the community can have
a bite at it, until a new release makes it official.

(or do i see things too simple...)

    Just my 0.02 euro cents.

    Hi,

I spent a better part of the afternoon compiling a newer version of Apache,
PHP, etc. for my sparc-linux machine. I assume this is necessary but
thought I'd at least ask after the fact: can one use packages pre-built for
intel-linux on sparc machines running linux?

    -K

    (Happy New Year!)
