I don't remember what I originally configured my install with regarding
sound. However, it does make a difference what windows manager you are running. I
would get sound with Gnome, but no sound using KDE. In order to get sound to
work with KDE, you need to disable the aRts sound daemon, and use something
else. I believe I used the same sound daemon that Gnome uses, although it's been
long enough ago that I forget the name. Hope this points you in the right
direction.
