Hi,
it's been a while since TaskJuggler 1.4.2 has been released. Shortly after the
release we decided to make a big step next. Some concepts that were
implemented for 1.x turned out to be to narrow minded and not extensible.
Prefixing certain task attributes by "plan" or "actual" to differentiate
between 2 scenarios was simply a stupid idea. Just like a few other things,
that we wanted to change. So we decided to go for a 2.0 release and get rid
of the broken syntax elements. In most cases we still kept the old syntax
around and just issue a warning. In some cases, we had to remove the support
for the old syntax, making TJ 1.x and 2.x project files slightly
incompatible. In all cases converting an old project to TaskJuggler 2.x
should be a matter of minutes. We will provide a migration guide in the
manual.
TaskJuggler 2.0 will also come with a number of new features. The HTML reports
are more customizable. Tasks, Resources and Accounts can be extended with
user-defined attributes. There will be many new functions to select what data
should be included in the reports. The Konqueror plugin to view the scheduled
results will also be significantly improved.
Most of this is done already, so we will for the first time do official beta
releases. The betas will be labelled 1.9.x-unstable. 1.9.0-unstable will be
released shortly. The 1.9.x versions are called unstable, since they did not
receive as much testing as the stable releases. Here at SuSE a number of
people are using the CVS head version already, so it should be fairly save to
use. But you should alwasy double check the results for any real world
project!
If you want to help improve TaskJuggler, find migration problems or suggest
improvements, please subscribe to the developer mailing list at
http://www.suse.com/us/private/support/mailinglists/index.html for further
discussions. If you are familiar with DocBook and want to help us with the
manual, you are highly welcome.
