From beta-programs at lists.suse.com Fri Apr 17 04:20:43 2020 From: beta-programs at lists.suse.com (SUSE Beta Program) Date: Fri, 17 Apr 2020 12:20:43 +0200 Subject: [sle-beta] [ANNOUNCE] SLE 15 SP2 Schedule and Closing the (openSUSE) Leap Gap Message-ID: <5e9982fbe787c_fff63fec2fc3845c98446@Macbouille.local.mail> We are finally able to clarify the SLE 15 SP2 Beta Schedule and announce an exciting new project, called Closing the Leap Gap. SLE 15 SP2 Beta Schedule First thing first, you will find below the new schedule and milestones: - Public Beta - Feb 07, 2020 - Public Release Candidate 1 - April 24, 2020 - Public Release Candidate 2 - May 15, 2020 - Public Gold Master Candidate - June 15, 2020 - First Customer Shipment - End of July 2020 The main change is the move of the FCS from end of June to end of July, and this allows us to provide a second Public Release Candidate! Of course this doesn't affect our weekly updates provided in our Online Channels[1] until GMC. Now if you wonder why we are making changes to our schedule, please read below. Closing the Leap Gap On April 9th 2020, we were thrilled and excited to send a proposal[2] to our openSUSE community about bringing openSUSE Leap[3] and SUSE Linux Enterprise even closer together! For 8 years, we were offering SLE's sources for usage in openSUSE Leap, but now after getting the openSUSE community's approval, we want to offer pre-built binaries from SLE in addition to the sources, to increase compatibility and to leverage synergies. This idea/project is internally called Closing the Leap Gap. We highly recommend you to read the full announcement[4] made on the openSUSE Mailing List, and read the Closing the Leap Gap FAQ[4] for more informations. Please rest assured that nothing disruptive is planned for neither SLE 15 SP2 nor openSUSE Leap 15.2. However while investigating the consolidation of SLE code base with openSUSE Leap, we noticed aspects that require simplification and clean-up in our SLE packages before a release. These changes will improve supportability, code stability and also make it easier for third-party vendors to develop in a cross-platform fashion for SLES and openSUSE Leap. Thus we have committed engineering ressources to get this done properly, and had to delayed our SLE 15 SP2 schedule to make sure that we have additional time to implement, review, test any changes. Overall this will help us improve the quality of SLE 15 SP2 and decrease the number of potential maintenance updates at FCS. Last but not least, we are at your disposal if you have any comments! And will be glad to have discussions with you. You can find everything you need either here https://download.suse.com/ or here libcurl-devel is part of the SUSE Linux Enterprise Software Development Kit 11-SP4 - hence you need to pick that: [cid:fceb5b9b-a725-42c6-a42f-b46fb7a0cf6e] Hope this helps. I sincerely think this could be interesting because both openSUSE 15.2 and SLE 15 SP2 are related, and of course your feedback is always welcome. Have a nice day and we wish you an happy testing, Regards, -- Vincent Moutoussamy SUSE Beta Program, JeOS and SDK Project Manager Paris, France Begin forwarded message: From: Vincent Moutoussamy > Subject: Discuss, Define and be Transparent with the openSUSE Community Date: 29 April 2020 at 16:16:29 CEST To: "opensuse-project at opensuse.org" > Hi, The SUSE Linux Enterprise Team is acknowledging the openSUSE community needs for a better and transparent collaboration with SUSE. We have now a momentum to think and be different. The symbiosis between SUSE Linux Enterprise and openSUSE is real, we share so much more than just code, we use the same tools like Open Build Service, openQA, similar maintenance processes, people (Release Managers, contributors, etc) and more. We might have been a bit quiet in the past but that doesn't mean we didn't evolve; over the years, we have created more bonds like Package Hub[1], foster our contribution with SLE Factory First Policy for SUSE employees and our Technology Partners, be more accessible during our development phase with the SLE Public Beta Program[2], just to name a few examples. But now we have a momentum to accelerate, especially with regard to being more transparent with our defects and feature requests for the benefit of the openSUSE distribution and community. So we heard you, and today we want to clarify and improve processes, for all of us, and give some inputs on SUSE internal discussions about kicking out the so called "closed doors". So without further ado, here is our action items: * Refresh and create openSUSE wiki pages for processes clarification - Lubo? Kocman has already started with documenting the process in place for retrieving SLE Feature Requests[3] and his plan is to present a real and better feature process for external contributors by October or sooner. - We will also review and improve "how to contribute[4], openSUSE Leap development phase[5]" to clarify and formalize information that existed for years, but was not documented. - Create new page about our "SLE Factory First Policy", and potential maintenance and quality assurance topics. * Talk more openly about openSUSE and SLE relationship, - "Current and Future strategy for openSUSE Leap"[6] and "Jump! Current state and upcoming changes"[7] during openSUSE virtual summit[8]. - Upcoming topic in the "How SUSE Builds its Enterprise Linux Distribution"[9] blog post. - A talk about "relationship in between SLE and openSUSE" at the Virtual SUSECon[10]. * Find the proper way to open our bugzilla.suse.com - SUSE is fully committed to protect our customers and partners private data hosted in our tool like Bugzilla. They trust us with their highly sensitive data, so we approach this topic very seriously. However thanks to the full handover of the Bugzilla instances from MicroFocus to SUSE, we now have full control over Bugzilla thus we can now discuss how to change our processes internally to combine data privacy and openness. - A group has been formed (Vincent Untz, Anna Maresova and Vincent Moutoussamy) to drive this project internally and will be in charge of discussing the proposal with all stakeholders including the openSUSE community of course. * Special attention to openSUSE 15.2 (and future) Leap bug reports - Last but not least, Lubo? Kocman, openSUSE Leap Release Manager, is committed to review, triage openSUSE Leap 15.2 bugs and feature requests (create a bug for openSUSE Leap 15.2[11]), and escalate to SLE Product and Release Manager. We believe this is an exciting and ambitious plan, and we hope to share more concrete information as soon as possible. In the mean time, do not hesitate to engage with the presenters of "openSUSE and SLE" talks, Lubo? obviously, and feel free to comment or send us your feedback here in this thread. Stay tuned, stay home, stay safe and stay green. The problem I am experiencing is: I am booting from the ISO attached to a HyperV hosted SLES 15 SP1 server. I select UPGRADE. Then it gets to the screen where the green, 3 segment status bar appears. The three bars progress until they become one solid color and then the system just hangs. I have let the VM sit at this point for well over 2 hours. I have never had to wait this long before when doing an upgrade. Would it be possible for someone to reply stating what the next step in the upgrade process should be showing up on the screen? This may help me figure out what the issue is. I have experienced issues upgrading other SUSE VMs in the past if they had more than one NIC. This VM does have 2 NICs. Could this be an issue? The VM is fully patched as of this morning. Thanks in advance for your help. As you requested. Yes, the next step is the screen should change and offer you further installation choices. On my gear I am testing with SLES15 SP2 running within a regular VMware ESXi server, not the HyperV kind. I would assume there is a hardware driver conflict which holds back your system, and if finally located then reporting it to the beta team would be valuable. Let's assume the NICs are the guilty parties. Thus try removing one temporarily and see what happens. I will say that SLES15 SP2 seems to be a little more picky about the hardware than we are accustomed, because I have run into some video driver (as simulated by ESXi v6.0) glitches. ??? Thanks, ???
