[sles-beta] few things to note after my first install

I don't think that this will change.

I bet you did not install with network enabled? If there is no network
configured at that point in time, the option will not help you.

No update repositories or no updates available? I would guess the last
one, but could be very well that the server error code is the same for both.

That's the SP2 part of the release-notes and not valid for SP3.

So you are installing SP1/SP2 patches on top of SP3, you should not do that.
