[sles-beta] One issue with GUI 'Main Menu' and good news with IPv6 testing

The problem mentioned below has been determined to NOT be caused by the SuSE v11.3 Beta. It’s a side-effect of using an old libstdc++ library in one of our utilities. We didn’t have trouble with this library with SuSE v11.2, but it was inevitable that this old libstdc++ library was eventually going to bite us as Linux releases kept marching forward and this library stayed rooted in the past. I’m pressing our developers to update the libraries in our utilities.

Thanks,
Jeff

Subject: [sles-beta] One issue with GUI 'Main Menu' and good news with IPv6 testing

I’m running the SLES v11.3 Beta (both bitnesses) in VMworkstation v9 while doing our evaluation. I installed all of KDE and Gnome, as well as 32-bit support, but otherwise we’re using the installer’s defaults. After the Linux installation, I installed the VMware tools, configured the network, setup Samba and installed our database.

Several times, after testing for a while I’ve encountered the error shown in the attachment. Once you hit this, the normal Main Menu will never appear again (no matter what you select from the popup shown in the attachment.) If you try to add it again from the “Add To Panel” applet, then you hit this error immediately. After you hit this error, the Menu Bar also seems broken. It will no longer launch many apps (kwrite or konqueror) from the Applications or Places drawers but seems to have no trouble launching certain Gnome apps (e.g., gedit) and most of the apps in the System drawer. The Alt-F2 panel to run an application is unable to launch a Konsole terminal but has no trouble launching the Gnome terminal. I’ve found no way to fix it once the break happens. I’ve done a ‘revert to snapshot’ several times and this error eventually surfaced again each time.

Otherwise, I’m currently doing extensive IPv6 compatibility testing between our products on SLES11.3 and our products hosted on other supported platforms, including Mac OSX, Windows and RHES6.4. Fortunately, the GUI Main Menu issue doesn’t interfere very much with my testing. For example, I’m still able to launch the network config tool from the system drawer and can open a Gnome terminal instead of a konsole. Other than these GUI issues with the Main Menu, everything looks OK so far.

Thanks,
Jeff
