From darrent at akurit.com.au Mon Jun 16 00:35:27 2014 From: darrent at akurit.com.au (Darren Thompson) Date: Mon, 16 Jun 2014 16:35:27 +1000 Subject: [sles-beta] Cosmetic, incorrect package install progress at end of install Message-ID: Team This is a cosmetic glitch in the new installer (from a network install/autoyast build). The package installation reports packages still to be installed, however the installation process has clearly finished that part and is moving onto other processes, leaving incorrect details showing (see screenshot). Is this worth raising an SR about or is it already known? -- Darren Thompson Professional Services Engineer / Consultant *[image: cid:image001.jpg at 01CB7C0C.6C6A2AE0]* Level 3, 60 City Road Southgate, VIC 3006 Mb: 0400 640 414 Mail: darrent at akurit.com.au Web: www.akurit.com.au -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I'm not sure "what" is broken at this stage. The "yast service-manager" module does not even list multi-user as an available target to choose on the pull-down list. If I try specifying: multi-user In my autoayst files then it gets really strange as you get dropped to an un-configured x-server login screen and then have to run "init 3" to get to the root console. Which of these odd/incorrect/non-intuitive behaviours do you wish me to log? (Hence the request for a "know good" example file). If I do a "default install" and then use the autoinst.xml as my starting point I get a long way through the build process but cannot get "graphics" target working and it ends with odd errors with networking. If I use some of my "earlier" working autoyast files, I get even more bizarre errors. (Is it just me or is there two complete duplicates of the "ser vice-manager" section in all the autoyast files that are created from "yast autoyast" module??? In any case, when I can get a "working" configuration I will be in a better situation to help run-down the "broken" test cases and raise SR's Darren On 16 June 2014 17:13, Josef Reidinger wrote: > On Mon, 16 Jun 2014 17:09:20 +1000 > "Darren Thompson" wrote: > > > Josef > > > > I can say clearly that "something" is broken. > > > > I'm not sure "what" is broken at this stage. > > > > The "yast service-manager" module does not even list multi-user as an > > available target to choose on the pull-down list. > > Hi Darren, > this is known issue, so not needed to report it. > > > > > If I try specifying: > > > > multi-user > > > > In my autoayst files then it gets really strange as you get dropped > > to an un-configured x-server login screen and then have to run "init > > 3" to get to the root console. > > > > Which of these odd/incorrect/non-intuitive behaviours do you wish me > > to log? > > I am not aware of second one, so if you can report it it would help us > and attach all logs, so we can see what exactly can be problem. > > Thanks > Josef > > > > > Darren > > > > > > > > > > On 16 June 2014 16:41, Josef Reidinger wrote: > > > > > On Mon, 16 Jun 2014 13:08:34 +1000 > > > "Darren Thompson" wrote: > > > > > > > Team > > > > > > > > Does anyone have an example autoyast file they can share which > > > > reliably builds a server to the "multi-user" target (e.g. no > > > > X/display server running). > > > > > > > > Simmilarly, what are the steps for go from a server built to the > > > > "graphical" target and getting it to reliably boot to the > > > > "multi-user" target. > > > > > > > > The "service-manager" Yast module seems to be able to adjust the > > > > "target" level but I cannot seem to workout how to get it to > > > > accept "multi-user" - Am I missing something or is that yast > > > > module "broken"? > > > > > > > > Any/all help appreciated. > > > > > > > > background: > > > > I have traditionally built my SLES servers with the full graphical > > > > install. Thanks. Can I suggest that SLES Workstation Extension (note SLES not SLE) is a better name if it's specific to SLES although I realise there could be confusion with Server vs Workstation (though you had that with Server vs Desktop in the previous name). Currently there is no plan to expand the configuration options offered by the according YaST-module. The authentication module is limited to the bare minimum that is required in order to create a successful setup. Users who want to do expert settings will need to edit the configuration file itself. Providing the "URI" and the "base dn" usually is enough to connect a client to a LDAP-service. If there are issues, please provide your configuration files. best regards Milisav -- Milisav Radmanic Sr. Engineering Manager SUSE Linux Enterprise Applications SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Jeff Hawn, Jennifer Guild, Felix Imend?rffer, HRB 16746 (AG N?rnberg) Maxfeldstra?e 5 90409 N?rnberg Germany From gjn at gjn.priv.at Mon Jun 16 09:10:04 2014 From: gjn at gjn.priv.at (=?ISO-8859-1?Q?G=FCnther_J=2E?= Niederwimmer) Date: Mon, 16 Jun 2014 17:10:04 +0200 Subject: [sles-beta] intel_rapl missing Message-ID: <1483424.3xXKQTWd5z@gjn.priv.at> Hello, what is this new message from the kernel, I never see it before ? It's harder than you would think, mainly due to the way display-server.service seems to be erroneously activated, even on multi-user target boots. I have found this process works: 1. Login to graphical console as root user. 2. run a "terminal" session (the yast service manager process is currently broken, it would be Bets/easier to just run that). 3. cd /etc/systemd/system 4. rm default.target 5. ln -s /usr/lib/systemd/system/multi-user.target default.target 6. cd /usr/lib/systemd/user 7. rm default.target 8. ln -s /usr/lib/systemd/system/multi-user.target default.target 9. cd /usr/lib/systemd/system 10. rm default.target 11. ln -s /usr/lib/systemd/system/multi-user.target default.target **** I have no idea why default.target is in these three locations, I would expect 2 of them are redundant but am not familiar enough with systemd to guess which **** This will "tell" systemd that you want to run in "multi-user" mode (e.g. the old init 3 level, without a X-server/GUI). The problem is that the display-server.service still seems to be run on boot (it mast be hard coded in somewhere) and I have not found a "working" way of stopping it ('systemstl disable display-server' does not help). What I have had to do is the following, which permanently stops the display-server from starting. 12. systemctl mask display-server *** reboot *** 13. shutdown -r now (you can achieve the same result by typing: 'init 3') if you prefer not to reboot. I hope this is found to be helpful. First off, it's oddly duplicated in the 'yast autoyast' module (see attached screenshot) which is confusing and could be a reason why it's not working properly. Secondly, all created autoyast file and even the automatically created 'autoinst.xml" file have both a "run-level" and and a "service-manager" section, which contain exactly the same information e.g. graphical graphical Lastly, the syntax/schema used does not even match that listed from the "yast system manager" entry on the public git-hub site ( https://github.com/yast/yast-services-manager ) which is a real pity as it's the only example I have found of how to disable a service (e.g. the pesky "display-server.service" ) when you want to install all the "graphical" files but only want to run "multi-user". This whole mess is going to have to recieve a lot more work before this is ready to be seen/used by the public. Adding more time for betas and release candidates (as we announced some weeks ago) is possible or "in scope", adding a completly new init-stack would not, as it would invalidate a lot of testing. This is also something that can be addressed in the cloud/HVM stack. You can clone a "golden" image, and thus also reset everything back to that state at the press of a button (delete & clone again). That works with a variety of containers or hypervisors. (I'm heavily using this for my own SLE 12 and Factory testing based on KVM, hosted on a SLE HA 11 system with OCFS2 for the thin provisioning / cloning.) NEVER ever change stuff in /usr/lib/systemd/system. /etc/systemd/system has ALWAYS precedence over /usr/lib/systemd/system, which means file with the same name in /etc/systemd/system will "hide" the one in /usr/lib/systemd/system. The proper way to do it is : run as root: systemctl set-default --force multi-user.target (or if you want to do it manually: ln -s -f /usr/lib/systemd/system/multi-user.target /etc/systemd/system/default.target) That's it. -- Frederic Crozat Project Manager Enterprise Desktop SUSE From darrent at akurit.com.au Wed Jun 18 02:13:24 2014 From: darrent at akurit.com.au (Darren Thompson) Date: Wed, 18 Jun 2014 18:13:24 +1000 Subject: [sles-beta] Help, getting an autoyast build for "multi-user" target In-Reply-To: <1403077936.4212.154.camel@par-r81vxc7.par.novell.com> References: <1403077936.4212.154.camel@par-r81vxc7.par.novell.com> Message-ID: Frederic Good Point... Team, do it the way he says... ;-) e.g. 1. Login to graphical console as root user. 2. run a "terminal" session (the yast service manager process is currently broken, it would be Best/easier to just run that). 3. systemctl set-default --force multi-user.target - This will "tell" systemd that you want to run in "multi-user" mode (e.g. the old init 3 level, without a X-server/GUI). *** reboot *** 4 shutdown -r now (you can achieve the same result by typing: 'init 3' if you prefer not to reboot). If you want to reverse this and run the full "graphical" (X) console again 1. Login to test console as root user. 2. systemctl set-default --force graphical.target - This will "tell" systemd that you want to run in "Graphical" mode (e.g. the old init 5 level, with a X-server/GUI). *** reboot *** 4 shutdown -r now (you can achieve the same result by typing: 'init 5' if you prefer not to reboot). We don't see anything like that in our logs. What tool are you using for VM management? Is it just the standard stuff that ships with SLES 12 (virt-manager, for example)? Is there a specific operation you're performing on your VM when you see that error? Does it correlate to changing the VM configuration, or to migrating the VM, for example? With your hint, we were able to duplicate the error in-house. Here's what my lead libvirt engineer has to say about it: ------- As it turns out, not really an error. If the domain config contains , I don't see the log message. E.g. <domain type='kvm'> <name>sles12b8-kvm</name> <uuid>40855800-b30d-c171-d447-f84e30aaa6cf</uuid> <title>This is a test ... virt-manager now asks for a domain's via virDomainGetMetadata. If the title exists, it is displayed next to the domain's little icon. virt-manager swallows the error if no <title> exists. virDomainGetMetadata is correctly returning an error (it cannot retrieve the requested metadata afterall), with the side-affect of the log entry. I'm not sure what we can do here, beyond patching out this little virt-manager feature. Jim ------- We haven't decided how to handle this in house, but now that we know the problem exists, we can deal with it. Do you have any questions or preferences on how we "fix" this issue? Please, be aware that SMT was tested with Beta8. AFAIK Beta9 switches to newer version of the SCC API, which is not supported by the released SMT. I intend to release an update of SMT as soon as possible, after some testing with Beta9, however, I cannot give any ETA at the moment. For now, please, use Beta8 for testing against SMT. For the past couple of betas, beta 7 and 8, I'm getting a kernel panic after the system boots once install completed. See attached screenshot. I'm using the SLES11 64-bit guest OS profile and have tried switching from SCSI to SATA disks plus upping virtual RAM from 768MB to 1GB but that doesn't seem to have made any difference. These are basic text-only installs of SLES12 with nothing fancy. I'm booting from mini ISO then pointing at network-mounted DVD ISO. Both ISOs match their checksums. I saw it with a beta 6 but that seemed to be a one off as after restarting VM it then booted. Now it seems to be repeatable. Please go to http://www.novell.com/beta and select "View my beta page". Here you should see all Beta's you are part of. Note that the directory contains the images for the SDK as well as for the SLE-WE Extension. We offer 3 DVD ISOs: DVD1 contains the binaries, the second DVD the sources and the third DVD the debuginfo packages. The final product will not contain the debuginfo packages on the media. For installation purposes you just need Media 1 for your architecture. Please verify the md5sum of the ISO using the MD5SUMS file, which can be found in the same directory on the download servers. Known issues (selection): (several) - not all texts are translated yet, but most are 881676 - runlevel 5 => 3 doesn't switch to VT1 but sticks on VT7 (general) - Firefox 30 beta8 is part of Beta8 (Firefox 31 ESR is target for SLE12) 883500 (ppc64le only): Bad page map in process modprobe Installation on s390x: Please disable the blacklisting of devices during the installation (cio_ignore). This code still has a bug and other devices beside the IPL device and the console are not enabled (bnc#882685) With this Beta9 snapshot we have reached several milestones: o Continue update, performance and regression tests. o Continue intense stress and certification tests. Be aware that we have provided snapshots of 'modules' at the download page with this Beta 9: Module "Legacy": The Legacy Module supports your migration from SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 and 11 and other systems to SUSE Linux Enterprise 12, by providing packages which are discontinued on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, but which you may rely on, such as: CyrusIMAP, BSD like ftp client, sendmail, IBM Java6. Access to the Legacy Module is included in your SUSE Linux Enterprise Server subscription. The module has a different lifecycle than SUSE Linux Enterprise Server itself; please check the Release Notes for further details. Module "Web & Scripting": The SUSE Linux Enterprise Web and Scripting Module delivers a comprehensive suite of scripting languages, frameworks, and related tools helping developers and systems administrators accelerate the creation of stable, modern web applications. Access to the Web and Scripting Module is included in your SUSE Linux Enterprise Server subscription. The module has a different lifecycle than SUSE Linux Enterprise Server itself; please check the Release Notes for further details. Module "Advanced System Management": This Module gives you a sneak-peak into our upcoming systems management toolbox which allows you to inspect systems remotely, store their system description and create new systems to deploy them in datacenters and clouds. The toolbox is still in active development and will get regular updates. Note that both are provided "as is" and not all packages that will go into them are already contained in them. We recommend to use them through the repositories available online after registration. Following James's suggestion of using the "Other" template, I was able to get Beta 8 to install as a guest on XenServer 6.2. HOWEVER, it did not detect that it was running under Xen, so it did not load the Xen kernel, and it does not drop out to the TUI installer, as it normally would when installing under Xen. So, to sum it up. Beta 8 hangs on boot if I select the SLES 11 template in XenServer, but it will install if I select the "Other" template. When selecting this one, it does not detect the hypervisor correctly, and uses the "hda, hdb" naming convention for block devices, does not load the Xen kernel, and DOES work with the graphical installation. The above is just a general "reporting my findings" paragraph, but now that I have gone through this exercise, it makes me wonder why the installer defaults to not loading the GUI installer under XenServer, even though the XenCenter client is capable of displaying the graphical content... Logically only the 'last" time it's run is it doing anything useful. My suggestion: Analyse the installation process for modules that touch a startup device. Set a "dracut needed" flag instead of actually running dracut Get yast/zypper to check for the "dracut needed" flag and run it as the last action during an install if set. I know that probably requires touching some low level install processes but I think the speed-up produced would make that worth investigation. The problem with this approach is that it leaves the system in an undefinied / inconsistent state for a few minutes, and if it crashes then, you have a really bad experience. Thus we have decided to follow the save way which indeed needs a bit more time, but we hope that people appreciate consistency and stability over 2-3 minutes of time. so long - MgE On 2014-06-23 T 09:29 +1000 Darren Thompson wrote: > Team > > Whilst watching an upgrade/install of SLE-12 I made the following > observation: > 1. dracut takes a long time to build it's images and install. > 2. dracut is called LOTS of times during the installation process (every > time a process touches a startup device etc, e.g. Kernel, multipath, > portland etc. > 3. I would still say that the "New Install" workflow would benefit enormously (much mpre than the "2-3 minutes of time" you suggest) from removing this repeated, time consuming step. I have not put a "stop watch" to it but I would say that between 20% and 30% of the installation time is taken with repeated dracut builds - at-least in my test ring case. I concede that "super fast" hardware would not be so impacted. In any case, as a beta tester I understood my role was to "make observations" and I still feel that this was a reasonable suggestion.
