I do have open-vm-tools installed, I do not use the packages but the on-line update, I added desktop applications" This screen will "flash" for about 3-5 mins then it's steady. With ctl+alt+fn one can, sometimes get a text prompt from the virtual machine, but very often it's the a prompt from the host. From the text prompt one can issue "zypper info open-vm-toos" and now they are there, a "zypper ve" also says all is well. A "startx" can bring you a gui, sometimes... A shutdown -h now will start the shutdown but it stops at the screen with the four blobs that flash in sequence and stays there for ever, one has to use the "power off" from the vmware tab of the machine to close down. This is VMware Workstation 14.1.1 I do not see this with SLES12, LEAP 42 or LEAP 15 Willing to try again tomorrow if you have new thoughts. All our QA/QE test machines run on x86_64 with VMware... Most started life in SLES10, most are ext3 and some XFS. Btrfs and snapper are not used. I have been working on getting an UPDATE to work, RC3 looked Okay and RC4 does UPDATE Okay, but after the 1st IPL I see the attached screenshot. Many Thanks for your input. __R ________________________________________ From: Kai Dupke [kdupke at suse.com] Sent: 06 May 2018 18:10 To: Waite, Dick (External); Oliver Kurz; sle-beta at lists.suse.com Subject: Re: [sle-beta] UPDATE with RC4 On 06.05.2018 15:15, Waite, Dick (External) wrote: > I'll take a look when I get home. If you have the zypper-search-packages-plugin package installed, you can type zypper search-packages open-vm-tools and it will report you which module contains the respective package. It needs access to SCC, which has the data. For fresh installation, the plug-in is installed by default and is available on the installer media. I would appreciate feedback about it and suggestion for further improvements (while not promising any for GA release). So it seems this is at least not a common kernel problem and we need more details or a reproducer. My day job is mostly on s390x and I was thinking on updating some machine on Saturday but they do mostly use XFS as do many of my x86_64 virtual machines running on VMware.. Their ticket number is an IBM one. ========================= ============================================== Suse just released a new kernel-default-4.4.131-94.29-1 package for SLES 12SP3 with some kernel security fixes. If you use XFS, don't install it! I installed it and the system wouldn't mount an existing XFS filesystem. Our friendly Suse engineer (thanks, Roberto!) told me that it's a regression in the kernel. A *NEW* XFS filesystem created under this kernel mounted under both 4.4.131 and the older 4.4.126. The biggest fix with this kernel is that now we have a file for speculative store bypass. If you cat it (/sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/spec_store_bypass) you get "Not Affected". So I don't think waiting for the fix will significantly harm anyone's system security... Any other bugzilla reports are private to SUSE employees only by default. However if you want to get access to the technical information on a specific bugzilla report you have to reach out to your SUSE support contact. That?s one of the main reason why we freely share bugzilla links/numbers, so you can use this reference with our support or consultant team. So please contact our support team via the usual support process if you want to be kept in touch about "Bug 1094405 - XFS filesystems won't mount with torn write (CRC failure) detected at log block". One of the main reason why we don't allow everyone to see bugzilla reports on released products is because it may content some sensitive data from our customers/partners AND bugzilla itself doesn't really allow fine grained access rights and an easy way to control/avoid sensitive data exposure. That being said, in case you have sensitive data to share during a beta program, we can switch a public bugzilla report to an internal bugzilla report if a public beta tester request it, or we can create an internal bugzilla report for you (https://www.suse.com/betaprogram/sle-beta/#faq-private). Regards, PS: The following is MY OWN OPINION, not SUSE: as long as we have a solid solution for handling the sensitive data in a future bugzilla version or in a hypothetic new tool, maybe we could be more open about our internal bugs. -- Vincent Moutoussamy SUSE Beta Program and SDK Project Manager -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... I get an issue at "Partition or System to Update" and Yast asked for logs, which I took. The filesystem is all XFS.... I was testing those Samba AD DC packages on SLES 15, openSUSE 15 and Tumbleweed but was never able to join a domain member, though :-/ Domain provisioning, joining a DC and DC replication worked, but not joining a domain member. As I had some hard deadlines, I came back to a Debian 9.4 deployment with the Samba 4.8 packages from the vanbelle.nl repository... and everything is working out of the box :-q So, in a couple of weeks, I'll come back to test the latest SLES/openSUSE releases and compare with the Debian deployment.
