Just ran into this yesterday as well, it's clear in the 12.3 file at
$ cat /etc/SuSE-release 
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 (x86_64)
# This file is deprecated and will be removed in a future service pack or release.
# Please check /etc/os-release for details about this release.

Already made mods to some of our scripts that had been looking at
SuSE-release.  Worried about the EDA software we support since those
ISVs are slow to change. Back in the early days of us using sles we had
to even spoof redhat-release files just to run many tools.
