We can argue semantics and logic until we're blue in the face.

The main issue I see here is a clash of two diametrically opposite philosophies.
The first is that your customers should be given the broadest options as to how they adapt your technology to meet their needs in their own environments.
The second is that you know what's best for them, and they should accept and adapt to what you decide they need.

Which do you think is more conducive to a linux based customer scenario?

Good point and I will concede that the "outcome" seems to be identical.

1. How do you register the sever to SMT during the normal installation
workflow (I seem to have missed the option where you specify the SMT server
URL in that registration form)?
2  Now what about small sites that do not have SMT installed and don;t
allow internet access?
3. Fundamentally, what is "wrong" with assuming the installation media is
sufficient to build a server?
