My guess is the reason the workaround is not working anymore is that your
12-SP5 instance is running 

cloud-regionsrv-client-10.0.5-52.80.1

This version moves the cache files from /var/lib/cloudregister (9.x version of
cloud-regionsrv-client) to /var/cache/cloudregister.

DMS 2.0.33 or earlier is not aware of this new directory and as such in
"migration mode" it does not mount them.  

As a workaround can you copy the files from /var/cache/cloudregister to
/var/lib/cloudregister before doing the migration?
